Sign-up by calling Pratt at (206) 328-2200.

DATES:
THREE SIMPLE CHAINS: Sat & Sun; Aug. 2nd & 3rd (10am to 4pm).
DRAGONFLY PENDANT: Fri, Sat & Sun; Aug. 8, 9, & 10th (10am to 4pm).

THREE SIMPLE CHAINS
In this two-day intensive introductory-level workshop we will unlock the age-old techniques of three ancient chain patterns that have been known throughout time and geography. Utilizing simple hand tools we will begin by wrapping sterling silver round wire into springs, cutting these springs into jump-rings and assembling these jump-rings into repetitive and sequential chain patterns. The first chain is a repetitive knott pattern known in South America as the Inca Puno. The second chain is a repetitive connector pattern known as the Boxx chain. The third chain is a combination of the first two chains to create a sequential chain pattern known as the Idiot's Delight and the Sequential Byzantine Chain. Each student will have the opportunity to forge their own s-clasp utilizing simple blacksmithing techniques with a hammer and anvil. You will leave with a bracelet on your wrist, a healthy hobby and a bit of genius under your hat. This is a good opportunity to do something fun with a partner or a young teen!
Prerequisite: No experience necessary; moderate patience and hand-eye coordination required. Appropriate for ages 12 and up.
Workshop fee: 60.00 for Pratt members, 75.00 for non-Pratt members; includes syllabus, tool usage, and silver wire.

DRAGONFLY CHAIN PENDANT
In this three-day intensive intermediate level workshop we will break down and define the Dragonfly design, which I developed two years ago. On the first day, we will begin by wrapping a stone pendant utilizing two gauges of silver wire to demonstrate the principals of stone wrapping. Next we will be utilizing simple hand tools to wrap, cut, and assemble twenty gauge round wire into the Sequential Byzantine chain. On the second day, we will begin to connect the Byzantine chain into the geometric patterns of the Dragonfly, exploring the possibilities of three-way and four-way connections. The completed Dragonflys will get polished inside a steel-shot tumbler and then we will work with two bead embellishment techniques to fulfill and complete the body and tail of the Dragonfly. On the third day, we will be shaping and polishing raw Amber by hand and then wrapping these teardrop shapes into the chain to fulfill the wing forms of the Dragonfly. You will leave with your own individualized Dragonfly Pendant, a healthy hobby and a plethora of unique non-machinery jewelry techniques. This is a good opportunity to do something fun with a partner or a young teen!
Prerequisite: Previous chain making experience is requested, yet not necessary; moderate patience and hand-eye coordination required. Appropriate for ages 14 and up.
