Angle Open the Knot Formation

The green rings (5&6) will be folded back and the red rings (3&4) will be angled open into a knot formation, revealing a rectangular opening within this formation, which will hold the next pair of rings as the Byzantine chain continues.

With the green rings folded back the red rings are separated and angled open, which is beginning to reveal the rectangular opening.
