In this weeklong workshop we will complete a Half-Square chain necklace that will be embellished with a strand of semi-precious beads. I will demonstrate how to utilize simple hand tools for wrapping wire into coils and hand-cutting jump rings. We will then be assembling pre-cut 18-gauge jump rings into the ago-old Byzantine chain. Next we will be adding perpendicular Crown formations onto the base chain. With the crown chain in hand, I will side step the final project and illustrate how to combine the crown chain into a Celtic formation. Back on track, we will be suspending the crown chain by a repeating sequence of larger jump rings to complete the Half-square design. The final necklace length will be embellished with beads and completed with an S-clasp. This workshop will conclude with a demonstration on forging s-clasps. You will leave with a completed necklace around your neck and a healthy hobby under your hat. This is a good opportunity to do something fun together with a partner or a young teen! No experience necessary, Ages 12 and up. Maximum number of students: 10. Workshop material fee: $120 includes all sterling silver jump rings, semiprecious beads, hand-forged s-clasp, beading wire, and crimp beads needed for the project. The instructor will provide all hand tools necessary, however students may bring their own flat-nose and/or chain-nose pliers if they choose. The material fee includes all jump rings and beads necessary, however students may choose to bring their own strand of 6mm beads if they have a particular semiprecious bead embellishment in mind. To help reduce eyestrain students with may also wish to bring their own freestanding light source (with extension cord) and head-mounted magnification. |
